We have been coming down to Costa Rica since 1997. We purchased Casa Mono Tití (formerly Géminis del Pacífico) in December 2000. We purchased the neighboring lot to save the trees and built our second vacation rental home Casa Mono Congo (building around the trees to protect the wildlife.) Our main business is ItsMyCasa.com where we can rent both buildings for groups up to 22 people (perfect for weddings and large family gatherings - like grandma's 92nd birthday - yes, we had this wonderful grandmother with her great family to celebrate her longevity.)
Our farm is located in the mountains between the Pacific and the Central Valley. We raise grass-fed beef using the Kobe method; we milk our cows and donate the milk and cheese to needy families daily. We raise sugar-cane and have a small coffee field.
Prior to living in Costa Rica, we lived in Chicago and owned a residential rental property business, Gemini Properties, for 12 years. Suffering through many Chicago winters, it was an easy transition from the residential rental business up North to vacation rentals in Costa Rica. We built a home near Puriscal in the mountains of Costa Rica in 2006 and sold our final property in Chicago in 2007 completing our permanent move here. Although, we live in the mountains about 1 hour from San Jose, we visit our beach homes in Manuel Antonio when they are available to us.
We are actively involved in the communities of Manuel Antonio and Puriscal. We donated a computer lab for the local elementary school in our farming community in Puriscal, Costa Rica. (11 computers, printers, air-conditioner, security bars for the windows.) You can view photos of the computer lab dedication here.
We are currently providing full university scholastic scholarships to 5 local neighborhood youth.
We have sponsored several Costa Rican soccer teams with uniforms. (Childrens teams, womens teams and adult teams.)
Pete teaches three levels of English to our neighbors. He has taught over 30 students and currently has 18 students. Ages of the students range from 8 - 23. The students have made great improvements in their English skills. Costa Rica has recently started requiring English to be taught in grade-school and high school. There is a lack of teachers outside of the central valley that can teach English. Some of Pete's students tested into the fourth level of University English. The farming community we live in has a lack of jobs for the recently graduated students, and those that can speak and write English, have a better prospect of obtaining a better paying, higher quality job than those who don't speak English.
We are active members of several ecological conservation groups.
We love Costa Rica and believe in giving back as much or more than we receive from living in our new adopted country. When you rent from us, you help us improve the lives of many Costa Rican families.
We had an amazing time at the houses. No complaints that I'm aware of! I forwarded this to our other guests and assume at least one or two of them will send you their comments as well.
We enjoyed the daily monkey visits, definitely seeing the mono titi monkeys most often but also we also saw the white faced monkeys almost daily, and heard the howler monkeys the first and last mornings we were there.
